My Proposal

I, Karlitza Belen Lebron. would like to propose for the Elderly Rights to make change for them in the future. The elderly are treated more carefully and more polite but they don't have a lot of rights like others do. I would like to propose a change to the the Elderly Rights to make a difference. They should have the same opportunities and rights like us.

An elderly individual has all the rights, benefits, responsibilities, and privileges granted by the constitution and laws of this state and the United States, except where lawfully restricted. The elderly individual has the right to be free of interference, coercion, discrimination, and reprisal in exercising these civil rights.An elderly individual has the right to be treated with dignity and respect for the personal integrity of the individual, without regard to race, religion, national origin, sex, age, disability or source of payment.

Other rights the eldery should have is the abuthority to complain about the individual's care or treatment. An elderly individual is entitled to privacy while attending to personal needs and a private place for receiving visitors or associating with other individuals unless providing privacy would infringe on the rights of other individuals. An elderly individual may manage the individual’s personal financial affairs.An elderly individual may choose and retain a personal physician and is entitled to be fully informed in advance about treatment or care that may affect the individual’s well-being.

 The Elderly Rights Act has provided a lot of useful resources for the elderly in their life but I think we could add some other things too. I would recommend all of there things to the poor senior citizens especially. The senior citizens are very important in our society. They are our inspiration when we are all grown up because we will become like them.

The Elderly Rights

The current state of the Elderly rights Act is excellent with the changed that were involved. Another change that occurred throughout the years is the reauthorization to Older Americans Act Choice for Independence in 2006. This provided a project called " Choices for Independence" which promotes long term care options for the elderly. 

The Elderly Rights began in 1965 and has been changing throughout the years. In 1965, the act was signed by president Lyndon Johnson and it provided a lot of benefits such as incomes in retirement and a hood healthcare. It also provided an Administration of Aging which protected the elderly citizens in the United States. The Act also authorizes to make community planning and service programs.

In 2000,  the Elderly Rights started to change. It added a new program called National Family Caregiver Support Program which helped the nation's needs of millions of families who care for their old loved ones. This Act also contains the same rights such as the protection needed for the older citizens's rights and dignity.

The AARP International Rights was made in 2008 when it was upheld. It provided place programs to improve the quality of the life of the elderly with the necessary protection, care, and support. They also encouraged the elderly to choose a healthy lifestyle by eating carefully, doing exercise, and by not smoking. These are habits the rights provide so the elderly citizens could have a good life.

In my personal opinion, the elderly should have the right to retake the driving exam so they can drive unless they have a medical condition. The Elderly with medical conditions should have a nurse in their homw if its necessary. They should have lower prices for their medications. I also think the elderly  should have a fun program that they could enjoy everyday in their life.

The AARP's struggle

The American Association of Retired Persons is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to helping older Americans achieve lives of independence, dignity, and purpose. The AARP has been an effective advocate regarding issues involving older persons, in part because of its large membership and its ability to mobilize its members to lobby for its positions before Congress and government agencies.

The organization has concentrated much of its effort on social security, medicare, and long-term care issues. The AARP has fought zealously to protect the Social Security benefits of retired citizens and has resisted efforts by Congress to change the system itself. The elderly members resist discrimination and fight by congress in a peacefull way but the most major discrimination is their age. Because of that they have many problems getting jobs.

 For male senior executives, the fear of age discrimination has led to an increasing demand for most older workers that appears little they can do to resist being swept aside in favour of younger replacements. Although such discrimination could be seen in a reluctance to hire workers who were perceived to be too young and immature for the job, in practice it refers to a bias against older workers. The argument that anti-discrimination laws are good for employers offends economics and common sense. If hiring and promoting old workers were in best interests would do so without the need for such laws.

The AARP'S Oppression

The AARP has been mnistreated by racial discrimination and wrongful termination so it was eventually sued by a man named Michael Moreno. He claims of failing and refusing to promote Latinos and Native Americans. Thomas A. Saenz said "With our nation's significant and fast-growing Latino population over 50, it is critical that an organization  as improtant as AARP include and incorporate Latinos at all levels of leadership.".

The AARP has had violations of civil rights in the constitution by  racial and age discrimination by other people to the elderly members.Elderly people are having a hard time looking for jobs because of their age.. Another Opression caused by the AARP  was a 63 year old women form Michigan by age discrimination. Bonita Brady says the group passed her over for a series of jobs because she was too old, despite excellent job reviews so she sued them. She was held as a health representative but she was fired by her age.

In the Civil Rights of the Constitution/ Bill of Rights, some violations have been violated like having equal rights no matter what race or age you have wich is part of discrimination. The AARP rights movement helps these people to have a better life regardless of the issues involving with the elderly people.

Some acts were made for the ederly like The Older Americans Act of the federal Administration on Aging. Civil rights of older people were also written into legislation.  The Age Discrimination  in Employment Act of protects applicants and employees age 40 and over from discrimination, and the Age Discrimination Act of 1975 prohibits discrimination on age.

The AARP's history

The AARP, American Association of retired persons, is based in the United States. The AARP was found by Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus for people age 50 and over in 1958. This type of organization provides resources for a good life and health. For example, it provides services, benefits, and medications. This association started by a group of bussinessmen like leonard Davis. As he made this organization, the government started investigating its non profit status in congregassional hearings but not alot of evidence was found.

The AARP is widely known for addressing issues affecting older Americans through a multitude of initiatives like having their own rights for a change.AARP also provides extensive consumer information, volunteer opportunities, and events including the annual National Event & Expo in Los Angeles. One of AARP's goals is to reduce hunger among seniors through the Drive to End Hunger. 

The AARP has a population of 40 million members in the United States. In modern day, the total US population is made up about 33.2 million elderly people. In Florida and Pennsylvania  had high proportions of elderly about 14 percent or more in the United States. The AARP having a alot of members needs the help of a good health care as well as a good shelter for the elderly as they are increasing,

Based on what I read about Roxanne's Blog, I think it was a good topic and it was very interesting to see how she added up so many details and examples.  I like how she defends the native americans based on what is true. She emphazises alot on the history of the white people and the Native Americans.

I think Randy's blog was presentable and interesting in a way I could understand what he was talking about. Hes statements and comparisons were very good too.

Upon my readings on Itze's Blog, I think that it was very interesting. I've always like her way of writing and the description she always puts to support her ideas. I reflect Mandy's Blog as being very spontanous in a way that he really put hard facts to support his main idea. Although he didnt put pictures to describe some major points in his essay, he put alot of description to everything that was occurring. I most say that It was impressing to see so much opinions he made on what he believes. It really defines himself as really defending the Indians and believeing what they really are.

Life at the reservations for Native Americans

Native Americans by the mid 1800s were forced by the government to move to reservations and obligate them to assimilate with the white people´s culture and customs. The white settlers also wanted to take Native American lands on the Great Plains or they will eventually die but it was difficult for Native Americans because it was their homw for many centuries. They were starving and suffering from food in their lands that they finally had no othyer choice but to surrender and move to the reservations.


When the Native Americans moved to the reservations, life became different. They had new customs and beliefs. Native Americans were no longer seemed as they are and they were all equal there. In the movie, Bury my heart at wounded knee. Chief Sitting Bull in the reservations was treated as a Normal native American and not a Chief with power. Most Native American children attended school and were called with white christian names they assigned to each one of them. This was also part of the assimilation process. They had to assimilate by cutting off their hair to look like them. Their religion was changed to christianity. In the movie, Charles Eastman was an inspiration for many Native American boys to assimilate with the white people. They had no liberty and had to follow and respect certain rules.


In the reservations, some problems they faced were mostly health concerns, food, respect, liberty, and many more. Native Americans became sick by diseases spreading through the reservationsbut there were not enough medications for everyone. The medications that were given were mostly cotoil wich is bad. Thats what happened in the movie with Charles Eastman because he was  a doctor that studied at Boston Medical School. Native Americans had lands that were divided with difficulties in growing crops and having certain amounts of food to eat. Most white people showed respect to Native Americans by welcoming them but it was told to avoid war and rivalry between the tribes because for them it was a land of peace.


Charles Eastmen, son of Chief Sitting Bull, was assimilated with the white people and he became a doctor that lived on the reservations for many years. He had also an affair and romance with Elaine Good Ale. Life for him was very good actually in my opinion. He had an office and a stabled house too. When the Native Americans came, he was very happy to see them but he had a hard time understanding his father and their sufferings. He helped the white people divide ther lands and make good offers. In his life, he also had an Indian name from his tribe wich was Kohiesa. Charles Eastman also worked as a police but his life became difficult remembering memories he had in his real home and he felt sad by the way he misses it so much.


Native Americans had a hard time in the reservations with the white people because of their surrender. In the reservations, they divided the lands with its individual tribes. Charles Eastman was an indian man who assimilated with the white people and lived on the reservations. I think that it was a good choice to move to the reservations because then they could die with diseases spreading around and the hunger they were facing although many issues ocurred it was better than the ones they had in their home.
